Employees at Heritage Manor nursing home in Newton voted Monday to join the United Auto Workers and are now a unit of Amalgamated United Auto Workers Local #997.

UAW Local #997 president Pat Teed and International Representative Dennis Walker expressed their support for the decision.

"The new members are excited to be a part of the union, to have a voice and to bring democracy to the workplace, and we're delighted to have them," Teed said. "Being union in the care facility system not only gives employees a voice for themselves, it also enables them to be a strong voice and advocate for the clientele they care for."

Teed said the union contract will affect 36 employees. Negotiations for a contract with Heritage Manor will begin soon.
