Wabash County
Population 35,120
Wabash County was formed
politically by European Americans in 1835, when
settlement increased after the American
Revolution. They named it after the Wabash
River. The name "Wabash" is an English
transliteration of the earlier French name for
the river, Ouabache. French traders derived the
French version from the Indian name for the
river, Wabashike (prounounced "Wah-bah-she-keh")
(meaning "pure white".) Much of the river bottom
is white limestone, now obscured by mud.
The County Seat is Wabash.
After intense competition between the towns of
Wabash and Lagro for the designation as the
County Seat, an election made Wabash the County
Seat by a majority of one vote. Wabash was first
settled in 1835, and the first Courthouse was a
brick structure forty feet square, costing
$3,000, which was finished in 1839 and continued
in use until June 17, 1871, when it was
destroyed by fire. By 1849 Wabash contained
about 200 houses ,of which one-fourth were of
brick, and there were 1,000 inhabitants.
