Ford execs praise UAW contract

The Detroit News
DEARBORN -- Ford Motor Co. executives say the tentative agreement reached with the United Auto Workers this weekend will allow the company to better compete with rivals and to return to profitability.

"This is a win-win for Ford and our employees," said Mark Fields, Ford's Americas division president. He was speaking in Dearborn with reporters during a review of new products. "It really paves the way for us to be competitive."

Derrick Kuzak, Ford's global product development chief, said the new contract -- which still must be approved by UAW members -- addresses many of Ford's challenges in the United State.

"It's very fair to our employees and retirees, and takes us another step to full competitiveness," he said. "It will certainly help."

Leaders from UAW locals are gathered today nearby to be briefed on details of the contract approved by UAW leaders early Saturday morning. They are expected to vote on it during today's meeting.

They then will schedule voting sessions at their individual locals.
