The Constitution of the UAW
The Constitution of the UAW is the highest law of our Union. It
not only provides the basis of the day-to-day operations of the UAW but,
equally important, it sets forth the right, guarantees and
responsibilities of all UAW members.
The Constitution is also an eloquent expression of our Union’s values
and vision of a democratic society with social and economic justice for
all working people. That vision is still a work in progress. For all our
Union has accomplished in the workplace and in society since it’s
founding in 1935, we all know the struggle for human dignity, equality
and justice is an ongoing process – one in which all of us need to be
actively involved..
It is not enough just to carry a Union card in our wallets; we need the
Union in our hearts.
As the Preamble to the UAW Constitutions says so well, democracy, both
in our workplaces and in our society, requires that workers through
their Union participate meaningfully in making decisions affecting their
lives.
I encourage you to study the Constitution of the UAW and carry its
democratic values and enduring vision of social and economic justice in
your hearts.
